Alice's identity is easily associated with the characteristics of an avatar brought into a game-space: an easily transformed self, not quite at risk, faced with unfamiliar situations, riddles, and challenges. Alice as avatar is an ideal of what we might hope to bring to play, defined by curiousity rather than fear or hesitancy. Whether pixelated or three-dimensional, blonde or brunette, she is familiar. Alice herself has been changed by the world of games: the Alice of American McGee revels in psychological darkness with the same force as recent reboots of Batman or Superman, her entire Wonderland twisted to fit a vision that the player understoods best only through already knowing Alice.
