Freedom is admittedly a risky business. We can choose to ignore the sound warnings
of...critics; we can continue giving full reign to the half-conscious impulses we have
embedded in our machines even while abdicating the kind of responsibility the critics plead for.
We can, that is, finally descend to equality with our machines. This would be a fearful
symmetry indeed, precluding the sort of understanding from which freedom arises and sealing off
the escape from pure, mechanical determination. (Talbott 35-36)
