For a special session at the 1997 MLA convention in Toronto, I am seeking papers exploring issues of visuality and gender in modernist texts. Papers might address problems of what Nancy K. Miller has called "the gaze in representation" and "the metaphorics of seeing in literature" in works by female modernists; intersections of modernist visual and literary representations concerned with gender; theoretical discussions of visual/verbal interaction in modernist culture; ways in which various modernist texts (literary, photographic, etc.) construct the gendered seeing subject in specific historical moments. I am particularly interested in American modernism but welcome submissions dealing with other national literatures.
