Author's Biography
Dr. John F. Barber teaches advanced composition, creative writing, technical
writing, and electronic pedagogy at Northwestern State University in historic
Natchitoches, LA, the oldest continually inhabited town in the original
Louisiana Purchase Territory. He is interested in pedagogical and cultural
issues raised by the intersection of literacy, technology, and society. In
addition to teaching, he directs the department's developmental writing program
and serves as the Director of the University Writing Center.
His publications and professional presentations often address the use of
technology in teaching and teacher training although he enjoys working in other
areas as well. His book, Richard Brautigan: An Annotated Bibliography,
remains a standard reference work.
His dissertation, "Talking Around the Electronic Campfire: An Ethnography of
Writing Teachers Investigating Computer-Assisted Composition Within A Computer
Conference," was awarded the Outstanding Graduate Student Research Award in
April 1995 by the Graduate School at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Computers and Composition: An International Journal for Teachers of
Writing honored his work in May 1996 as Finalist in the competition for the
prestigious Hugh Burns Award for Best Dissertation in Computers and Composition
Studies.
In a more non-academic vein, John Barber is a dynamic figure. He manages time
efficiently, pays his bills on time, and is often acclaimed for his ability to
prepare extraordinary four-course meals using only yogurt and granola. He has
navigated the Mississippi River, been caller number nine, and spoken to Elvis.
This is his first hypertextual writing.
