First launched in March 2010, Pinterest has become a widely used and popular social media site. Here, I provide some background information about the site and its users, including the basics of using Pinterest and demographic information on its users, and examine popular media representations of the site. In general, this site has been characterized as a women's space, and the demographic information supports this assertion. As a characterized women's space, the site gathers both criticism and support in the popular media. I review how the site can be used and how it has been characterized to establish the framework for the case study rhetorical situations I explore more closely later in this text.
